The Australia Education System

Choosing to study in Australia ensures you receive exceptional quality education, a high standard of living, and a curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking, ethical understanding, communication, analytics, and practical learning. With over 22,000 courses and more than 1,100 institutions, Australia offers a vast array of options for students.

The Australian education system is supported by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), a government policy that establishes standards for qualifications, specifies levels of education, and provides certification. This framework ensures consistency and quality across all educational institutions in Australia.

Quality Assured

Another key benefit of Australian education is that it is quality assured by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA). TEQSA is a national regulatory and quality agency for higher education that monitors and regulates the higher education sector in Australia.

Additionally, the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) framework ensures the protection of student rights, which include the following:

  • Ensuring the well-being of international students.
  • Maintaining the quality of education provided to students in Australia.
  • Providing accurate and current information to students.

Levels of Education

School Education: Like states, school education in Australia complies with primary school, secondary school, and senior secondary school. After successfully completing the senior secondary education (year 12) students get a senior secondary certificate.

Tertiary Education: It includes universities and higher education, Vocational Education Training (VET), and pathway programs.

At the university level, higher education offers diplomas, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. There are a total of 43 universities in Australia, with 40 being government-funded, two being international universities, and one being a private university.

Vocational courses provide students with practical, industry-based skills, offering a direct pathway to employment. These courses are offered by numerous training organizations, education centers, and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions funded by the government. Certificates are awarded based on the duration and the level of occupational skills, ranging from Certificate I to IV.

To assist international students in adapting to Australia’s education system and teaching style, various pathway programs to higher education are available. These programs offer foundation courses and English language courses tailored to the needs of international students.

PR Pathways

International students have access to a variety of pathways. The one that’s right for you depends on various factors like the degree you hold, your English proficiency, your work history, and other prerequisites. The following are the three most common pathways to Australian PR.

1.Post-Study Work Visa in Australia

Many applicants discover they are not immediately eligible for permanent residency after finishing their studies. This can be the case because they lack the necessary points for skilled migration or because they lack sponsorship from an employer. In this situation, applicants can choose the Post Study Work Visa (subclass 485) which is an appropriate visa after their studies.

Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485): This type of visa has two streams which are the Post Study Work Stream and the Graduate Work Stream.

  • Post-study Work Stream is for students who graduated recently and should apply for this visa within 6 months of completing their course. The duration may range from 2 to 4 years depending on the qualification.
  • Graduate Work Stream is for students who have skills in occupations that are in the skilled occupation list of Australia. The stay duration is up to 18 months on this visa.

Skilled Recognised Graduate Visa (subclass 476): This is for international students who have completed engineering from a specialized educational institution in the last 2 years and they can get this visa for 18 months to 5 years stay-back duration, which depends on their skill level and qualification.

The Post Study Work Visa easily fulfills the requirements needed for a permanent visa. That could be, for instance, by completing Australian work experience or by improving one’s English proficiency to gain more points for skilled migration.

2.General Skilled Migration

It is not necessary to have an employer sponsor you to qualify for a permanent visa under the skilled migration program. This is based on a point test in which the minimum point as a pass mark is 65 points. These skilled visa points are given based on factors like your skills, Work Experience, English language ability, educational background, and so on to add points.

3.Employer-Sponsored Visas

This is an alternate visa pathway when the employer doesn’t meet the skilled migration requirements. This is the next best option because it is easier compared to general skilled migration. This pathway is a process to obtain a temporary visa at the beginning and then move towards a permanent visa after working in Australia for at least 3 years for the employer who sponsors you.

Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500)

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) is the visa type required for international students planning to study in Australia. Here are the key features of this visa:

  • Duration: Allows you to stay and study in Australia for the duration of your course, which can be up to 5 years.
  • Work Rights: Permits students to work for a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight during their semesters and unlimited hours during semester breaks.
  • Family Members: Provides the option to bring family members to Australia on the same visa.

Requirements for an Australian Student Visa

To obtain an Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500), you need to fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Letter of Offer: Provide a letter of offer from the university or educational institution where you have enrolled.
  2. Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE): Obtain a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) document issued by your education provider.
  3. English Proficiency: Demonstrate English proficiency through recognized tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE.
  4. Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE): Submit evidence showing that you genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily for the purpose of studying.
  5. Proof of Sufficient Funds: Provide proof of funds to cover your tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs for the duration of your stay in Australia.
  6. Medical Clearance: Obtain a medical clearance certificate to prove that you meet the health requirements for entry into Australia.
  7. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC): Purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) to cover your medical expenses while studying in Australia.

How to Process the Australian Student Visa

  1. Gather Required Documents: Collect all the necessary documents mentioned earlier, including your Letter of Offer, Confirmation of Enrolment, English proficiency proof, financial documents, medical clearance certificate, and police clearance certificate.
  2. Prove Visa Conditions: Ensure that you meet all the visa conditions and provide evidence to support each requirement.
  3. Create an IMMI Account: Create an IMMI Account on the official Australian immigration website to begin the online visa application process.
  4. Submit Online Application: Complete the online visa application form accurately and submit it through your IMMI Account.
